Romano explains why Chelsea sent sporting director on a “mission” to South America last week

Fabrizio Romano has been through his usual September to November quiet period, but he’s ramping up again ahead of a January transfer window.

He dropped an unexpected “here we go” confirming a move last week when he said that Chelsea had agreed a deal to sign Deinner Ordonez from Independiente del Valle in Ecuador. On his podcast this week, Romano followed up with more information about how the deal went down.

It sounds like the Blues had to fight off some serious competition to sign the 16 year old, who won’t join for more than two years.

“Chelsea were on a mission in South America last week… they are going to sign this boy who they think is going to be something really special in the future,” Romano explained.

“Two clubs from England and one from Germany were interested in Ordonez… Chelsea sent one of their main men when it comes to recruiting, Sam Jewell was sent to South America to close the deal. Chelsea really believe this boy has big potential.”

While we don’t expect any major first team additions to Chelsea in the winter window, just like last year the next few months will likely be peppered with a few more surprise announcements like this as we continue to hoover up young talents.

In other news…

Chelsea’s last South American talent signed long before they moved was Estevao – and it’s fair to say that move is working out pretty well.

Enzo Maresca has been criticised for some of his rotation in recent weeks, and faces a big question this weekend when two first team key players will have to be left out.
