There has been much debate about the current weight of Pittsburgh Steelers TE Darnell Washington. The broadcasts always mention his listed weight of 264 pounds, which is what he entered the league at, but anybody that follows the team has known it’s much higher than that. Now we know for sure as Darnell Washington told the world how much he actually weighs.
“I ain’t finna cap to y’all. I ain’t weigh myself in a minute, but I know,” Washington said via St. Brown Podcast. “I’m a keep it a buck. I’m 311 [pounds].”
Here is a clip of the segment from St. Brown Podcast via Josh Norris on X.
Keep in mind that he told the media at OTAs in the spring that he shed 10-15 pounds for this season. That would mean he previously was playing at 321 or 326 pounds. To put that into perspective, he would have been heavier than any Steelers offensive linemen last year. Even right now, at 311 pounds, he is the same weight as Broderick Jones, and heavier than Zach Frazier or Isaac Seumalo.
There is a reason why Washington originally earned his keep in the NFL as an extra blocker on the line of scrimmage. He literally was the size of an offensive lineman. Measuring in at 6065, 272 at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, Washington has added 39 pounds since then.
TE coach Alfredo Roberts had previously revealed that his weight was in the 300s, but they have otherwise shied away from letting the world know his true size. At his size, and with 34 3/8-inch arms, Washington can absolutely make a transition to offensive tackle some day. For now, they are more than content with him being a factor in the receiving game as a tight end.
He lit the internet on fire over the weekend when he made three Cincinnati Bengals defenders look like high school players as he stiff armed and plowed his way for 31 yards up the left sideline.
He certainly doesn’t run the 4.64-second 40-yard dash that he did when he was 274 pounds at the combine anymore, but he is much more athletic than any other 311-pound players in the league. He has hurdled defenders multiple times over the last couple seasons. It’s no wonder he’s nearly impossible to tackle.
It’s a simple physics equation. Newton’s second law states that force is equal to mass times acceleration. At his mass, and relative athleticism for his size, good luck generating enough force to knock the freight train that is Darnell Washington off track.
