The former Newcastle United goalkeeper has disagreed with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The Magpies currently sit 14th in the Premier League table and are just two points above the relegation zone after losing 3-1 away to Brentford last time out.

Jamie Carragher: Eddie Howe has taken Newcastle United as far as he can

Carragher told Sky Sports: "I don't see Newcastle winning a Premier League, so I'm not sure there's much more he can do. And that's not just talking on the back of Newcastle being a couple of points outside the relegation zone or questioning the manager in any way. But I think Newcastle have let him down.

"The topsy-turvy nature of the club in terms of sporting directors - all the people behind the scenes. It almost feels at times like he's there on his own. The big Saudi investment hasn't really kicked on.

"Now they could question the PSR, the rules - I get all that. But something to me, when I look at how he had to handle the summer with the (Alexander) Isak situation, getting players in late like Yoane Wissa.

"It's been a mess at Newcastle really and when you're talking about one of the greatest managers they've ever had in their history, I think he deserves better. And if I'm thinking how Eddie Howe's thinking, if that England job came up in the summer after the World Cup with Tuchel's contract situation, I'd be there in a shot.

“Because as I said, I think he's being let down. And I don't think he can take Newcastle any further than what he's done so far."

Newcastle United cult hero disagrees with Jamie Carragher

Although Newcastle’s struggles in the Premier League are well documented, Howe can point to progress in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Howe’s side have won three of their opening four European matches, putting them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages, and also into the last eight of the Carabao Cup for a third consecutive season.

Krul, who made 185 appearances for the Magpies across 11 years, has disagreed with Carragher, believing Howe still has “steps to go”.

“He is one of the best managers the club has ever seen,” Krul told Sky Sports. “He has single-handedly transformed the expectations of the city. The club is on the up.

“Lots of changes behind the scenes and I feel if you see his interviews, how he deals with all the stress. He’s the steady of it all, he’s the leader.

“Is there a bit of pressure? That just shows you how far the club has come because the expectations now are now for Newcastle to be top half in the Premier League, fighting for the Champions League spots.

“Has he taken them as far as he can? I think there are still steps to go. He’s more hungry than ever to prove people wrong and I think that starts Saturday.”
