Even NBA legends sometimes struggle to deal with their children leaving the nest.
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James joked about his son and teammate Bronny moving out after the Lakers' 140-126 win over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, November 18.
"I think he's enjoying the process," LeBron, 40, told the media when asked about his son's development as a pro. "I think you can, obviously, ask him more than me. He's not a resident anymore so we don't talk as much, he has his own place."
The NBA's all-time scoring leader stifled a laugh, then turned to his son off-camera and asked, "Bronny how are you!?"
Bronny, 21, is LeBron and wife Savannah James' eldest son. They are also parents of son Bryce, 18, and daughter Zhuri, 11.
LeBron hasn't shied away from sharing details about his family life. In October, he opened up about his relationship with Savannah, 39, and the lengths he would be willing to go to make his marriage work.
"I know I don't want to be alone, that's for damn sure," LeBron said in an appearance on Savannah's "Everybody's Crazy" podcast. "If I have to fight, crawl, scratch, bite, whatever to keep mine. I got to keep it. I gotta do what I gotta do. I don't want to be alone. I'm [from] an only child, single-parent household."
In an appearance on the "360 With Speedy" podcast the month before, he added that his marriage with Savannah is not "picture perfect."
"It's not, man," he said. "I'm gonna be honest. A relationship is never picture perfect. But if you're OK with working through the hardships and the adverse moments, then it will make it all worth it, man. We've been together since high school, so s*** ain't always going to be a bed of roses, man - in any relationship, let alone someone you've been living with for 20 years."
Tuesday night was also LeBron's season debut after missing the first 14 games of the season with sciatica. He scored 11 points and dished out 12 assists in the Lakers' win, marking the record 1,293rd consecutive game in which he has reached double-figures in scoring.
"It was just fun to be out there with the guys, man," LeBron said after the game, per ESPN. "It's been rough mentally for me. This is the first time I've started a basketball season and not played since I've started playing basketball, like 9 years old, I've never missed the beginning of a basketball season."
Now in his record 23rd season, it's fair to ask how much longer LeBron will play. It was a major goal for him to share the court with his son - something he talked about while Bronny was in high school and a freshman at USC. This is their second season playing together.
"I need to be on the floor with my boy, I got to be on the floor with Bronny," he told ESPN in 2023. "Either in the same uniform or a matchup against him. … But I would love to do the whole Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. thing. That would be ideal, for sure. … I'm here already, so I'm just waiting on him."
