“I hope so” – Manchester City loanee drops major hint about future intentions

Manuel Akanji left Manchester City to join Inter Milan quite late in the summer transfer window.

Since his arrival in Italy, the defender has become a regular first-choice for the Nerazzurri. He’s played in every game since joining, starting every single time in Serie A.

Inter now find themselves in a title race and Akanji spoke to Sportmediaset about his situation.

The Manchester City loanee was asked about his thoughts on Inter manager Cristian Chivu. He said the Romanian has a lot to learn but he approaches management very well.

He said, relayed by Tuttomercatoweb: “He’s still young, but 1 really like how he approaches the team and the staff, the way he communicates with us. I’m really happy with him right now.

“Sure, he’s young and still has a lot to learn, but he’s had an excellent career, and 1 think he can take inspiration from that, from the coaches he’s had. We’ll see how he goes.”

The Switzerland international was also asked about his future at Inter. Akanji indicated his intention to depart Manchester City permanently.

“I hope so. We’ll see what happens this season, then we’ll decide what to do with the club. I don’t know, it depends on how the season goes, but right now I’m very happy in Milan.”

Inter are challenging on all fronts this season, so it’s no surprise that Akanji wants to stay.

He’s proving pivotal to Chivu’s back three from a tactical perspective and has shown ability on the ball. This has reduced game time for Yann Bisseck, with Benjamin Pavard having departed already.

Inter have the conditional obligation to buy the defender permanently. It will be exercised if the 30-year-old plays 50% of games or wins the Scudetto. The way things are going, these targets can be realistically achieved.
