Detroit Lions star DB dealing with toe injury as week of practice begins

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions held a walkthrough instead of practice today, providing a lengthy estimated injury report.

Detroit listed cornerback Terrion Arnold (concussion), safety Brian Branch (toe), left tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder), safety Kerby Joseph (knee) and right tackle Penei Sewell (ankle) as non-participants.

Those estimated as limited are edge rusher Marcus Davenport (shoulder), center Graham Glasgow (knee), edge defender Josh Paschal (back), guard Tate Ratledge (knee), cornerback D.J. Reed (hamstring), receiver Isaac TeSlaa (oblique), running back Sione Vaki (ankle) and tight end Brock Wright (ankle).

Estimated practice reports aren’t anything to lose sleep over. But it’s never a great sign to see any injury report include 13 players as limited or missing from practice.

Arnold missed last week’s game in concussion protocol. The second-year cornerback has missed three games, and exited five of the seven he’s been active for early this season.

Decker has been working through shoulder issues every step of the way. But the veteran left tackle has continued to play since returning form a two-game absence. Sewell has also been featured on the injury report in recent weeks, but continued to play on Sundays.

Branch’s toe injury is a new issue to track. The hard-hitting safety appeared to get banged up when making a big hit and getting flagged for a personal foul in Philadelphia last weekend.

Davenport, Reed and Paschal continue to work inside their 21-day return windows. Reed sounds like he has a good chance to return this week after being out since the Week 4 game against the Cleveland Browns.

“D.J. Reed looks pretty positive here, we’re going to get him a week of work here and see where he’s at,” Campbell said on Monday. “Obviously, Davenport’s getting better.”

The Lions coach added that Reed and Malcolm Rodriguez are at the top of the injured players list for those being the closet to returning.

Frazier as a full participant is also a good sign for his progress from a knee injury. The rookie offensive lineman missed all of training camp and the preseason. But has been back at practice, and could provide a new face for the struggling offensive line to try out.

Rodriguez (knee) was a full participant one day after being activated from the physically unable to perform injured list. The linebacker needed the full 21-day window to get activated, but should be good for this weekend against the New York Giants.

Running back Jacob Saylors (back), offensive lineman Miles Frazier (knee) and receiver Kalif Raymond (cramping) were also listed as full participants.
