New Orleans Saints Land Hometown Receiver, Nephew of NFL Legend

The New Orleans Saints overhauled the wide receiver position over the past three weeks. The team traded Rashid Shaheed to the Seattle Seahawks during the NFL Trade Deadline and mutually agreed to part ways with Brandin Cooks earlier on Wednesday. As a result, the Saints have only three receivers on the active roster and need to add more talent to the position.

According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, the Saints have signed Jha’Quan Jackson, the nephew of Ed Reed, to the practice squad. He played college football for the Tulane Green Wave and returned to his hometown after spending the last two years away. Jackson can be elevated from the practice squad three times without penalty; a fourth elevation requires a promotion to the active roster.

Jha’Quan Jackson committed to the Tulane Green Wave in 2019 and spent the next five seasons developing into a standout punt and kick returner. He hauled in 109 receptions for 1,743 yards and 17 touchdowns across 56 games, along with 116 yards on 12 carries and one score. Jackson also totaled 60 punt returns for 677 yards and one touchdown and 36 kickoff returns for 772 yards, earning All-AAC Second-Team honors in 2022 and Third-Team in 2023.

The Tennessee Titans drafted Jha’Quan Jackson 182nd overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. He recorded one reception for eight yards across 12 games, plus 28 punt returns for 215 yards, and 16 kickoff returns for 412 yards. Unfortunately, the Titans cut Jackson during roster cuts, and he remained unsigned for the first 11 weeks of the regular season.

The Saints promoted Kevin Austin Jr. to the active roster on Wednesday. The four-year player has been elevated for gameday one time this season, in Week 3, where he failed to haul in his lone target across 22 offensive snaps. Austin joins Chris Olave, Devaughn Vele, and Mason Tipton as the lone four receivers on the 53-man roster.
