The Spurs entered the 2025-26 season as one of the most tantalizing groups in the NBA. The Silver and Black are home to some of the league's brightest stars, and many questioned whether or not they would be able to take the leap early in their development. So far through 14 games, they have.
The Spurs are evidently ahead of schedule and performing at a level that many did not think was possible. They currently stand as the 4th seed in the Western Conference with a record of 10-4 and look to contend amongst the top.
In a recent episode of the Run It Back podcast, former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins stated that the Spurs are perfect where they are. He mentions that De'Aaron Fox is exactly what they needed and that they have the perfect collection of veterans and overall talent. This begs the question: Should the Spurs trade for a star or stand pat?
The Spurs are a candidate to trade for a third star
Over the past year, rumors of trading for a third star have continuously flown around this team. Whether it's Lauri Markkanen or Anthony Davis, the Spurs have consistently been linked as a team that can house a disgruntled superstar.
Even with a 10-4 start, some could argue that this team needs more. Harrison Barnes' hot start may not last, which opens up the possibility of landing the final infinity stone by acquiring a dominant and consistent power forward. Additionally, a move could be made at small forward, a position where Devin Vassell has struggled.
With a collection of draft assets and movable contracts, all of the logistics of a superstar trade make sense for the Spurs. There is no doubt that they have the means to make something happen. However, while the opportunity is there, I would have to agree with DeMarcus Cousins; the Spurs don't need to make a move.
The Spurs should ride it out with the team they have
There is no reason to break up something that is going perfectly well. The young Spurs are already exceeding their expectations and have looked amazing when fully healthy. They proved their status in a huge win over the Rockets this season and will continue to show their worth when they take on other giants.
De'Aaron Fox is an excellent co-star to Victor Wembanyama, and you shouldn't think otherwise. His presence creates gravity away from the superstar and provides the extra scoring punch that the Spurs need.
Along with the stars, the Spurs have the perfect group of complementary pieces. Players such as Julian Champagnie and Harrison Barnes give the Spurs excellent outside shooting, while guys like Luke Kornet and Keldon Johnson can do the dirty work. The Spurs have every piece they need. Acquiring a star would mean sacrificing multiple of these core components.
Once the Spurs get fully healthy again, they will prove to any doubters that they are legit and have no need to trade for another star. Even if this season isn't the one where they strike gold, the playoff puzzle is looking complete, and all they need is additional time working together and continuing to improve.
