CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A unique day camp, “GirlDads Care,” is making a special stop in the Queen City later this month, aiming to take the vital bond between fathers and daughters from the sidelines to center court.
“Making the investment and being present is something that a child never forgets, and what better teammate to have then to have your father,” said Will Mosley, founder of GirlDads Care. Mosley realized a significant gap after becoming a father to a daughter: Beyond Father’s Day and the occasional father-daughter dance, there were few dedicated spaces for dads to truly connect with their girls.
### **The birth of GirlDads Care**
Mosley explained how the organization came to be: “There are 356 days in a year; there has to be more than three events going on. So, I just started talking to dads and we started to build our communities, and this is how we got started.”
GirlDads Care was born as a sports skills camp where fathers and daughters train and compete side-by-side, culminating in a friendly, competitive game. This month, the nonprofit brings its impactful basketball skills camp to Charlotte, adding an extra special touch with a bit of Hornets action.
### **Life lessons through sports**
“There are so many life lessons that can be taught in sports: self-determination, having focus, being a team player, bounce back,” Mosley said.
These words were backed by compelling statistics:
* Children with involved fathers are 43% more likely to earn As.
* They are 33% less likely to repeat a grade.
* They are less likely to become teen mothers.
Additionally, girls who play sports demonstrate higher self-esteem and leadership skills, according to the U.S. Department of Education and the Women’s Sports Foundation.
### **Benefits for fathers, too**
The benefits extend beyond the daughters, as Mosley noted a “revolution of dad’s groups throughout the country, and they’re meeting up building a community of fathers spending time with their children. It’s nice to see they have support.”
These communities provide a valuable resource for fathers, offering a space to share experiences and seek advice on everything from navigating dating questions to general parenting support.
### **Event details**
The father-daughter skills camp is scheduled for Nov. 26, the day before Thanksgiving. As an extra special treat, all daddy-daughter duos participating in the skills camp will receive tickets to the Hornets-Knicks game.
