Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool what they“need to do” in January

For most clubs, January represents a chance to address glaring weaknesses or capitalize on contract situations that summer deals cannot facilitate.

Arne Slot’s side could enter the winter window in a precarious position. Currently languishing in eighth place in the Premier League, it remains to be seen if the Reds will be able to claw their way up the table again.

According to Sky Sports, Crystal Palace believe only Liverpool may attempt to make a move for Marc Guehi in January.

Other major European sides interested in the defender are only prepared to sign him on a free transfer next summer.

Meanwhile, Antoine Semenyo has emerged as a credible target for the Anfield club.

Bournemouth inserted a £65m release clause into his summer renewal—a clause specifically triggered for January, though at a deadline within the window.

The release clause drops further in summer 2026.

Semenyo’s credentials this season have been undeniable. In just 11 Premier League appearances, the Ghana international has accumulated six goals and three assists.

However, speaking to Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher feels that Liverpool “need to” buy a central defender in the upcoming window:

“Liverpool need to spend in January, they need to buy a centre-back,” said Carragher.

“They should have bought a centre-back in the summer, they didn’t, and then the one centre-back the did buy – [Giovanni] Leoni – who looked fantastic got an ACL injury, so we won’t see him until next season.”

“Liverpool are probably one injury away at centre-back from really derailing the season, so they have to go into the market in January.”

If heavyweight European sides like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich fail to secure Guehi to a pre-contract agreement in the winter, it could indicate he’s prioritizing a move to Liverpool or another Premier League club.
