Alan Shearer has urged Liverpool to think twice before going after Antoine Semenyo, who has a release clause in his Bournemouth contract which will become active in January.

The Ghanaian winger chose to remain with the Cherries in the summer whilst a number of their top stars headed for pastures new. Semenyo has gone on to become a leading light for Bournemouth this term and has come up with six goals and three assists in his first 11 appearances, fuelling further interest in his services.

Two of those goals came on the opening night of the campaign at Liverpool as Bournemouth levelled the contest for a period. Semenyo ran the length of the pitch before firing past Alisson for one of his goals.

There is talk of him taking on a new challenge come the New Year with Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham among those keen. But Shearer insists those eyeing Semenyo's signature must consider the environment he will be coming into, claiming he's been at a "tiny" club in comparison.

Liverpool have seen such dangers first hand with Shearer referencing the struggles experienced by Milos Kerkez, who was a hugely impressive performer for Bournemouth last term. He moved to Anfield for £40million but has been in and out of the starting XI such have been his struggles.

The Premier League great told Betfair: "Antoine Semenyo has been linked with a move to Anfield, now, I don't know what Liverpool's plans will be for next season but there'll be a huge list of Premier League clubs that have already enquired about him and would love him in the team because of the ability that he has.

"As we've seen with Kerkez, it's alright playing well at Bournemouth where it's a great football club, but in terms of size it's tiny compared to someone like Liverpool. I guess you can say that with most players. These clubs invest a lot of money into players, so they'll know everything they need to about the player already."

Liverpool invested heavily in their frontline over the summer, bringing in Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. They've failed to click however and with Mohamed Salah experiencing a sharp dip in form there is talk of life beyond the Egyptian.

The Bournemouth ace claimed recently that he's attempting to keep the noise about his future at bay. He said: "I don't think about it too much. I try to stay present as much as I can. You see the news all the time, I see it as well, I'm not oblivious, but I try to keep focused."

Bristol City, who sold Semenyo to the Cherries for around £10m in January 2023, would be due 20 percent of any profit made on the winger.
