Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) player Jonquel “JJ” Jones announced her intention to join the Project B women’s hoop league via social media on Monday.
Jones is now the fourth WNBA player to express interest in the newly established global startup league, which is expected to begin play in Europe and Asia in November 2026.
The Grand Bahama native joins a growing list of WNBA players — now including WNBA All-Stars Nneka Ogwumike, Alyssa Thomas, and three-time league champion Jewell Loyd, who made her announcement on Tuesday.
Jones, who won the 2024 WNBA championship and earned Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors with the New York Liberty, expressed her excitement about the offseason opportunity, stating that she wants “to be able to continue to play against the best players in the world, play with the best players in the world, and be able to see new parts of the world.”
With women’s sports continuing to grow exponentially, Project B is one of the newest professional leagues, providing players with additional offseason basketball opportunities.
The league will launch with a pool of 66 players divided among six teams.
Those teams will play seven two-week tournaments in cities across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
One of the major attractions for WNBA players is that salaries are expected to be higher than those paid by the WNBA.
Additionally, the league is not expected to conflict with the current WNBA schedule.
Project B joins a short list of women’s professional leagues established in recent years.
Unrivaled, founded by Jones’ teammate Breanna Stewart and Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier, launched in 2023 with a 3-on-3 playing format.
Athletes Unlimited also features a women’s professional basketball league that uses weekly drafts and an individual points system instead of set teams.
As for Jones, the former WNBA MVP and league champion is one of the more notable players to commit to Project B.
Over the past two offseasons, Jones has played in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA).
Jones played for Inner Mongolia during the 2023-24 season, leading the team all the way to the finals. During the 2024-25 season, she joined Sichuan Yuanda in the WCBA.
Jones, who plays for the Liberty in the WNBA, wrapped up the 2025 season averaging 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting 49 percent from the field.
As it relates to Project B, while the league is still in its early stages, it is expected to draw increased interest from professional players as the WNBA and its players’ union continue to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement focused heavily on salary and revenue distribution.
