Renee Slegers shared her thoughts on a critical 2-1 triumph for **Arsenal**against Real Madrid.
The Gunners grabbed two goals with headers from Alessia Russo in the second half to complete a comeback after Caroline Weir scored a superb volley. The result means **Arsenal**are two wins from four fixtures in the Champions League, and their hopes of a finish in the top four are still alive.
The goal, and other opportunities for the guests, were mostly cases of self-inflicted damage from Arsenal, but the overall solidity of the side was another reason for the coach to be impressed.
“I think in the first half, not so many chances created.
“I think we have a couple of shots. They get the set-piece, the free-kick. I think we set up a bad situation for ourselves where we gave away the free-kick and they scored from the second phase. Of course, we're not happy with that going into half-time, 1-0 down, but the players were really calm.
“We spoke about a couple of moments in the game where we wanted to exploit them and wanted to do it better. Everyone had to believe in the calmness to go and execute. It was a high-pressure moment, going into this game, and then 1-0 down, so I’m really proud of the players and how they reacted.
“\We wanted to work with crosses today against Madrid. A certain type of cross. We got a couple of those but maybe could have created more of those. Alessia in the box is so good. Not only in that final phase and the finishing - she scored two great goals for us - but all the work she does on the pitch.”
“Of course, you want to limit them to even less because I think they got out on us a couple of times in behind. Overall, you're playing against a really good team. Their front four are really good players.
“This is a top game where the opposition is also really strong and tries to create chances. I'm happy that from open play we didn't concede a goal today. The players deserve it. It's been a challenging block for us. We're really happy that we finished it with a win. Like I just said to the players, every time we've had challenging times, they come back and they've done that again. We're really proud.”
