The NBA season has certainly presented the Memphis Grizzlies with challenges so far, but it’s also shown them a few things to be excited about. For example, they have a promising young rookie who could be someone special for years to come.
Writing on social media, Keith Smith praised Cedric Coward, a 22-year-old guard who is enjoying his first year in the league. Smith called him a “bright spot” in a tough year for Memphis.
“Cedric Coward is going to be so good. Already doing a ton of high-level stuff. And he’s not afraid of the moment either. A real bright spot in rough Grizzlies season so far,” Smith posted on X.

So far this year, Coward has produced 14.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists on 47.7 percent from the field and 40.6 percent from the three-point line. Those are intriguing numbers, especially when it comes to his percentages.
Coward’s willingness to step up and his lack of fear of big moments are the most attractive things about him, and they are sure to earn him more minutes as the year goes on. So far, he has started in just two of the team’s 15 games, but he might work himself into a permanent spot in the starting five if he keeps putting up robust numbers.
Coward has come to the Grizzlies at a very interesting time for the team. They are currently dealing with a lot of concerns about what’s ahead for them, mostly because Ja Morant’s relationship with the team seems to be falling apart.
This could lead to trades and big changes, but it also might open a pathway for Coward to earn more minutes.
