Al Horford left the Boston Celtics during the offseason after his contract with the franchise expired. He opted to sign with the Golden State Warriors, inking a two-year, $11.6 million contract. By heading out West, Horford increased his earning potential while also positioning himself to potentially contend for another championship ring. Unfortunately for Horford, things haven’t gone to plan in the Bay Area. He’s struggling to secure a consistent role in Steve Kerr’s rotation and has underperformed when given opportunities. The veteran big man has suited up for 11 games so far this season and is averaging career lows in minutes (22.1), points (5.2) and field-goal percentage (33.8%). He’s also slumping on the perimeter, hitting just 31.9% from deep, which is his lowest total in 11 years. I’ve been keeping tabs on former Celtics and Al Horford has cooled down since his hot start:– 22.1 minutes per game (career-low)– 5.7 points per game (career-low)– 33.8% from the field (career-low)– 31.9% from 3 (lowest since 2014)Worth noting he hasn’t been fully healthy pic.twitter.com/8jSSQXuxdy— Daniel Donabedian (@danield1214) November 19, 2025 Horford is 39 years old. A period of regression was inevitable for the 2024 Celtics champion. However, his drop-off from last season has been notable. And while some of his struggles are likely due to learning a new system, it’s clear that his start with the Warriors has been far from ideal. Joining the Warriors gives him an opportunity to compete for a championship. His skill set plugs multiple holes in the team’s rotation. In Horford’s absence, the Celtics have been leaning on a big-man rotation of Neemias Queta, Luka Garza and Xavier Tillman to help fill the void. Of course, the losses of Luke Kornet and Kristaps Porzingis also hit the franchise hard. Still, Celtics fans likely would have preferred their veteran leader to stick around, as he would have anchored the middle of the floor for Joe Mazzulla’s team. The 2025-26 NBA season is still in its infancy. Horford has plenty of time to bounce back from his early struggles. If he does, the Warriors will emerge as a threat in the West. However, from the outside looking in, Celtics fans will question why Horford chose Golden State as his next landing spot, as they’re certainly not among the favorites to challenge for a championship this season.
