Derby County head coach John Eustace has confirmed that Liverpool loanee Owen Beck has required surgery on his hamstring and will be returning to Anfield.

Beck needed to be substituted in a under-21s game clash at Blackburn after 40 minutes just as he was on the precipice of a making his first-team appearance.

But Eustace confirmed he has now gone under the knife and will be continuing his rehab at Liverpool. That means the terms of his season-long loan are set to end in January.

It is a huge blow for the defender who only signed a new deal at Liverpool in the summer and had moved to Derby after putting pen to paper to play regular first-team football.

Speaking ahead of the clash against Watford this weekend, Eustace expressed his sympathy for the 23-year-old.

"Unfortunately, Owen has had to have surgery on his hamstring, so he's going to be out for the next three or four months," he said.

"I feel really sorry for Becky, and obviously, I had worked with him at Blackburn.

"Bringing him to the football club was a real success from the recruitment side, especially to bring a player of that quality here and to be able to showcase him.

"Over the course of the season, I think everyone was excited about that, but unfortunately, he's had a really difficult time.

"We all feel sorry for the boy, but it's all part of his learning and his development.

"He'll come back stronger, but it's not going to be with us."
