Swansea City hold talks with former Liverpool coach over manager job

Swansea City are on the hunt for a new manager after dismissing Alan Sheehan after only six months in charge.

Swansea City are pushing ahead in their search for a new head coach following the dismissal of Alan Sheehan earlier this month.

The Welsh club parted ways with the 39-year-old on November 11 after a disappointing run that saw them win just four of their opening 15 Championship fixtures, leaving the Swans languishing in 18th position.

Sheehan, who had been appointed on a permanent basis in April following two impressive interim spells, ultimately couldn’t meet the standards expected at this stage of the campaign.

With the managerial vacancy now open, Swansea initially pursued Swedish boss Kim Hellberg from Hammarby, but those hopes were dashed when the highly rated coach opted instead for negotiations with Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

The setback has forced Swansea to pivot quickly, and their attention has now turned to former Liverpool elite development coach Vitor Matos.

Matos spent five years at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp, where he was instrumental in bridging the gap between Liverpool’s academy and first team, helping develop talents like Conor Bradley, Caoimhin Kelleher, and Trey Nyoni.

The Portuguese manager is currently in his native nation coaching second-tier side Maritimo.

His impact has been swift and significant—the Madeira-based club currently sits third in Liga Portugal 2 with 20 points from 11 matches, on course for a dramatic improvement from their 12th-place finish last season.

Now Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail has reported that Swansea City held talks with Matos this week over his willingness to make the switch to the Championship side.

According to Portuguese reports, Maritimo have placed a €1 million release clause in Matos’ contract and are unwilling to negotiate.

However, Swansea is reportedly prepared to trigger that clause to secure their man.

The Swans will no doubt be hoping to finalize an appointment ahead of Saturday’s crucial fixture against Bristol City, though assistant Darren O’Dea will take interim charge for that match.
