Liverpool have been dealing with some key injuries this season, with Alisson Becker, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giovanni Leoni the most notable recent absentees. The Reds have been in inconsistent form as of late and will be looking to bounce back after the international break, with some returning stars potentially helping them do just that.

Some of those injury troubles extend well beyond the current senior team, however, with some players out on loan suffering from their own issues. One notable concern comes for Owen Beck, a Liverpool academy graduate who has spent several seasons getting experience elsewhere.

The left-back joined Championship side Derby County in the summer on a season-long loan, reuniting him with head coach John Eustace, who he played under at Blackburn the year prior. An early injury setback kept him out of the team, but there was some hope of a return when he featured for the Rams' academy side last week.

However, after suffering a hamstring blow after just 40 minutes on his return, Beck had to be substituted, and the extent of that injury is now looking worse than first feared. Eustace revealed as much when speaking to the press ahead of the weekend, as he said: "Unfortunately, Owen has had to have surgery on his hamstring, so he's going to be out for the next three or four months.

"I feel really sorry for Becky, and obviously, I had worked with him at Blackburn. Bringing him to the football club was a real success from the recruitment side, especially to bring a player of that quality here and to be able to showcase him.

"Over the course of the season, I think everyone was excited about that, but unfortunately, he's had a really difficult time. We all feel sorry for the boy, but it's all part of his learning and his development. He'll come back stronger, but it's not going to be with us."

Beck's loan deal is set to be terminated in January, with a return to Anfield already confirmed while he recovers from his latest injury setback. The 23-year-old didn't make an appearance for Derby during his spell at the club, while he has made three appearances for the Liverpool senior side so far.

It's a blow for the left-back, who had been been an exciting signing for Eustace over the summer. The Derby head coach said at the time: "He’s a really exciting young player and I was very fortunate to work with him last year.

"I think everyone could see the growth he made playing in the Championship, and he’s a super young talented player and he’s one of the most exciting full-backs in the country for his age at the moment. He’s just a very good young player. There is a lot to improve, and if he comes to Derby and chooses to come to us, our job is to help develop him."

Beck himself outlined the challenges before the season, when he spoke to RamsTV and explained how staying free from injury was a key objective of his. He said upon joining Derby: "First and foremost, I want to play games.

"I want to play and stay injury-free. In the game, I'm going to set myself personal goals. Also, I'm sure the gaffer will have goals that he wants the team to achieve. Hopefully, I can hit my personal goals and help the team achieve theirs too."

Unfortunately for the Liverpool star, that hasn't been possible, as he now makes his return to the club. Full focus will be on the recovery process over the next few months, with the Welsh defender likely to look ahead towards getting fit for next season.

Beck signed a new long-term deal at Liverpool in July 2025, putting him on new terms before he made the move to Derby. It gives him some time to build back from this latest setback, without the pressure of needing to find a new club or any other opportunities.
