What Thomas Tuchel plans next for Curtis Jones before World Cup

Curtis Jones has not made an England camp so far this season due to combination of injury and intense competition for midfield spots in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Curtis Jones finds himself in a precarious position as his hopes of representing England at the 2026 World Cup hang in the balance.

The Liverpool midfielder has not featured in a Three Lions camp this season despite previously earning senior caps, with injury complications and fierce midfield competition under Thomas Tuchel proving too much to overcome in recent months.

The battle for central midfield spots in Tuchel’s setup has intensified since last season.

Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice will likely be among the first names on the squad sheet, and the emergence of players like Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton have further squeezed the available slots.

There is also a sobering reality facing Liverpool’s England representation for the summer tournament.

While five Reds players have already secured qualification spots for their respective nations—including Salah (Egypt), Mac Allister (Argentina), Endo (Japan), and Alisson (Brazil)—there exists a genuine possibility that Liverpool could have minimal or even zero representation in England’s squad for the World Cup.

However, Tuchel has not written Jones off entirely.

Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail has reported that the England boss will hold talks with the Liverpool midfielder during the upcoming weeks, presenting him with a clear roadmap for forcing his way back into World Cup contention.

Tuchel has previously indicated that players earning regular club football stand a genuine chance of recall, particularly if they can demonstrate the quality required to compete at international level.

For Jones, the next few months represent do-or-die territory to keep his World Cup dream remains alive.

The 24-year-old first earned his first senior England cap on 14 November 2024 against Greece, and has since gone on to earn six caps for the Three Lions.
