Not everyone from ESPN shares Cam Newton’s dismissive stance on the New England Patriots. The former MVP quarterback doesn’t trust his old team’s hot start. Newton called the Patriots “fool’s gold” on Friday’s “First Take” after their Week 11 win over the New York Jets. ESPN insider Adam Schefter disagreed with his colleague’s declaration during a Wednesday appearance on “WEEI Afternoons.” “I don’t believe that,” Schefter said. While Schefter doesn’t expect the Patriots to win a championship, he anticipates their first AFC East title since 2019. He’s also not writing off New England’s chances to make a deep playoff run. Yeah, they are.” Schefter jokingly praised his ESPN coworker for understanding the assignment and creating headlines on the network’s daily debate show. He also acknowledged that Newton could still get the last laugh. “If they go one and done, then Cam will be proven right. That’ll be fool’s gold, but the team will decide that in the postseason,” Schefter added. “But the fact that they’re even being talked about as fool’s gold at this point in time, in a year where they’re in a prime spot to win the division, great.
