Ben Johnson has blunt reaction to Mike Tomlin’s comments on Ja’Marr Chase spitting controversy

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson shared his thoughts on Mike Tomlin’s no-message to his players in the wake of Jalen Ramsey’s ejection against the Cincinnati Bengals.

In the wake of the incident, in which Ja’Marr Chase spat on Ramsey, which prompted the veteran cornerback to punch the wide receiver, Tomlin was asked whether he had a message for his players if they lived that situation again.

“I have no message. If someone spits in your face, do what comes natural,” Tomlin said.

On Wednesday, Johnson mentioned those comments when sharing his thoughts on Tomlin’s NFL career.

“He sets the bar very high,” Johnson said. “Nothing but respect for him, how he goes about his business. He holds his players accountable. I think you saw it even this week, with some of the quotes talking about a player getting spit at. His reaction to it, I mean, he’s 100% right as far as I’m concerned. He hit the nail on the head. He just keeps it real and authentic at all times.”

The NFL investigated the matter and suspended Chase for one game. The suspension was upheld on Monday by hearing official Jordy Nelson.

The Steelers (6-4) and Bears (7-3) are in similar situations. They lead their respective divisions, but dangerous teams are after them. The Bears took over the NFC North division with their Week 10 win over the Minnesota Vikings, while the Steelers resist the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North.

Sunday’s duel can help them drift away from their closest pursuers, but neither team can afford to lose it. The Ravens reached the .500 mark after beating the Cleveland Browns, putting pressure on the Steelers, while the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers will root for the Steelers to stop the Bears.
