Cam Newton praises Bryce Young after Panthers passing record broken against Falcons

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Perhaps the best player to ever wear a Carolina Panthers uniform gave praise to a current one.

Cam Newton -- on his 4th&1 YouTube show -- addressed Bryce Young’s career game this past weekend against the Atlanta Falcons, in which he passed for 448 yards and three touchdowns, and broke Newton’s franchise single-game passing yards record.

The Panthers needed every yard from Young against the Falcons as they rallied for a thrilling 30-27 overtime win.

Newton held the previous record with 432 yards, which he did in just his second career game. The Panthers legend was asked about Young’s performance after cameras caught Young hitting Newton’s trademark “dab” dance in the locker room after the Atlanta win.

“Earlier this year, we had quarterbacks that had to prove it this year,” Newton said on his show. “Bryce Young was on that list. And it’s not all about wins and losses ... more so than showing flashes and showing proof. Over the last couple of weeks, prior to this last week [against Atlanta], they’re winning football games -- but it’s not because of Bryce Young.”

“They got the running game,” Newton continued. “Now, can Bryce Young win us a game if our running game is not effective? That’s what he proved [against the Falcons].”

With the most recent win, Young advanced to 4-1 in his career against the rival Falcons -- his most wins against any team. In those five games versus Atlanta, he is averaging 238 total yards per game, and has accounted for 10 total touchdowns.

Newton called out Young’s stellar play during his matchups with the Falcons, and challenged him to carry those results over when playing other opponents.

“Bryce Young -- you’re having fun,” the Panthers’ only NFL MVP said. “This will be the challenge moving forward. Bryce Young, if you play every single game like you’re playing the Atlanta Falcons -- boy, we’ll be alright.”

“Throwing for that many yards, taking control and taking command ... oh, man, that’s beautiful to see,” Newton went on. “But the challenge will be -- and I’ll say it again -- play every single opponent as if they were the Atlanta Falcons. And if you do that, you’ll be good to go.”

Young talked about the respect he has for Newton after the most recent victory over the Falcons, and said it was “definitely an honor” to break his single-game passing yards record.

Newton seemingly reciprocated a few days later, when he said he was “proud of” the Panthers’ current quarterback.

“From one Carolina Panther, who once was, to a current Carolina Panther -- I’m proud of you, bro,” Newton said. “Keep rocking and rolling.”

Young and the Panthers will have a big opportunity to show the country they are an improved team when they travel to San Francisco to face Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers on Monday Night Football on Nov. 24.

According to FanDuel, the Panthers were seven-point underdogs as of Thursday morning. WBTV will air a simulcast version of the game, which will be an ESPN production. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m.
