The Philadelphia Eagles continue to win games. However, they don’t look like the offensive juggernaut they were last season.
Some claim that new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo is to blame for this regression. Others, however, blame quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Notably, that includes former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who said the Eagles’ star “has to get better.”
“[Jalen Hurts] has to get better. If he doesn’t get better, the Eagles aren’t winning the Super Bowl. They’re just not going to be able to shut everybody out on the defense,” Houshmandzadeh said.

Perhaps both things can be true. On the one hand, the Eagles’ play-calling has been predictable and conservative. On the other hand, Hurts has often failed to find the open man.
This isn’t anything new. Hurts has always had issues reading coverages and going through his progressions. His success has been a byproduct of the stacked team around him, including running back Saquon Barkley.
Of course, that’s not to say that he’s not a good quarterback, and no one can take anything away from him. That being said, the shortcomings that he has shown since entering the league as a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft may not change at this point in his career.
Hurts is a great athlete and a very good scrambler, but he’s a so-so passer. Former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was more creative and found ways to get Philadelphia’s playmakers involved, and he often hid Hurts’ flaws with his game plan. This is just who the Eagles’ quarterback has always been.
