The New York Giants have gotten many things wrong over the last decade. When they got rid of Tom Coughlin, they kept Jerry Reese as general manager.

When the Giants fired Pat Shurmur, they kept Dave Gettleman as general manager. Now, New York fired Brian Daboll as head coach, and they are keeping Joe Schoen as general manager. This is the third time in the last 10 years that the Giants fired the coach but kept the general manager. The common theme in this is owner John Mara having no idea what he is doing. He should have fired Daboll and Schoen are the same time. New York is making another mistake by keeping him around.

Jourdan Rodrigue of the Athletic wrote his latest story in the Athletic about can it ever really work in the NFL when a head coach gets fired but the general manager remains? Rodrigue interviewed a senior executive about this current Giants mess and said,
“(A) red flag, to me, when an organization just fires a coach is that they’re not being introspective enough about the shortcomings around the coach. That would be my red flag. It’s not necessarily on the GM, it’s on the owner, president, everyone. ‘Oh, if we just change the coach everything will be better’. No, there’s always stuff to change in your organization. A head coaching change is a symptom that something is wrong in your organization. It’s rarely just the coach.”
This executive is correct because there are more issues with the Giants than just coaching. There has been very poor scouting and drafting over the last several years. New York has done a horrible job with roster construction as well. This is not ideal that they are keeping Schoen. There is a reason why Giants fans want him fired.
If they were to finish with a 2-15 record again, it would be hard to justify keeping him in the front office if this happened. New York was 3-14 last season. Mara must not care about winning if he keeps him in the front office here.
