Celtics Legend Weighs In On Whether Jayson Tatum Should Play This Season

The Boston Celtics are nearly a month into the regular season, but they’re still without Jayson Tatum, who remains sidelined by an Achilles injury suffered in May. He’s working hard to return this season, however, possibly as soon as February. Most of his rehab updates have been encouraging, and he appears to be ahead of schedule. However, some have questioned the wisdom of Tatum pushing to return this season, especially if he’s not 100 percent. There’s concern that he’ll risk further injury if he rushes back. With former Celtics legend Isaiah Thomas back in town this week to accept an award, The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin asked him whether he thinks Tatum should try to come back this season. Isaiah Thomas on if he thinks Jayson Tatum will play this season:“Personally I think he should take his time… but I know Jayson, he’s a competitor and he’s working everyday to get back. And he feels a way in terms of owing the city his greatness each and every night.” pic.twitter.com/jMgaLAIkDs— jb (@lockedupjb) November 19, 2025 “Personally, I think he should take his time. There’s no rush,” Thomas said. “Obviously if they’re in contention and playing for something and he’s healthy, I know as a competitor, he’s probably gonna wanna play. But making the most sense of things, I just think it’s smart to just be fully healthy, especially coming off an Achilles, and just be ready for next year.” Story continues below advertisement However, Thomas knows how much Tatum misses playing and how badly he wants to get back on the court. “I know Jayson, I know he’s a competitor. He’s working each and every day to get back,” Thomas added. “And he feels a way in terms of owing the city his greatness each and every night.” Story continues below advertisement Tatum has spoken about feeling a responsibility to the fans and his teammates, so don’t be surprised if he does everything in his power to come back this season.
