Cam Newton doubles down on ‘fool’s gold’ comment about Patriots

Cam Newton isn’t backing down from his “fool’s gold” comment about the success the Patriots are having this season.

“Things can be taken out of perspective. Things can be taken out of context. Now I did say the Patriots are fool’s gold, and I’m gonna stand on that,” the former Patriots quarterback said on “First Take.” “I was referring to the fact that it was a question that was asked, ‘Does the AFC now go through the Patriots, or New England?’ I said, ‘fool’s gold.’ Why did I say fool’s gold? Because there’s not a soul in this beautiful gymnasium that will say they will take Drake Maye over a wild card winner in Patrick Mahomes, in Lamar Jackson.”

Statistically, the Patriots have one of the easiest schedules this season. But they did beat the Buffalo Bills and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road and have an undefeated record away from Gillette Stadium.

Newton hasn’t given New England its flowers and has dismissed Maye as a top quarterback in the league on a few occasions. The former MVP has said Maye is playing well and having a great season, but wants to see him play more “well and capable” competition.

“Drake Maye - respectfully, you’re having a great season. But I also put Drake Maye in a position where it’s like, we don’t really know,” Newton said, “similar to (Daniel) Jones.”

Both Maye and coach Mike Vrabel weren’t bothered by Newton’s comments. Vrabel said they won’t use it as motivation for the team to play better, while Maye said he’s only worried about what those in the locker room think — and that he wasn’t even sure what show Newton was on.

New England’s next opponent probably won’t make Newton’s feelings change if the Patriots emerge victorious against the 3-7 Cincinnati Bengals who will be without star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase.
