Rodgers returned to practice on a limited basis, something he indicated to reporters Wednesday he would try to do. Practice reps are needed to evaluate his readiness for the weekend after suffering a fracture in his left (non-throwing) wrist last Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. As he and Mike Tomlin have outlined, functionality and safety are key for him being cleared to play in Chicago. Being able to take snaps from under center, hand the ball off, utilize play-action, and protect himself when falling are elements the team is evaluating before deciding if he will start against the Bears.
Mason Rudolph will start if Rodgers can’t play. It’s not clear when Pittsburgh will make that determination. It could come Friday after the team’s final practice, Saturday or, in theory, during Sunday’s pre-game warmups.
Warren is likely to play after twisting his ankle against the Bengals. Though cleared by team doctors, the Steelers held him out of the rest of the second half last Sunday as RB Kenneth Gainwell made plays and finished with two receiving scores. Warren did not practice yesterday but returned today for a limited session.
Highsmith failed to practice all last week due to a pectoral injury but practiced today for the first time since, albeit in limited fashion. Trending in the right direction, his status for the weekend remains unclear. If he misses a second-straight game, Nick Herbig will earn another start. Herbig leads the team with 6.5 sacks. Holcomb looks likely to be available after missing the last three contests.
Slay is at the end of concussion protocol and is set to be available against the Bears. His role is uncertain given his struggles coupled with James Pierre’s ascension, but Tomlin noted Tuesday that both will see reps. It’s likely Pittsburgh will split snaps between both of them with beat writers wondering if Slay could face a quick hook. Williams was concussed on the opening kickoff last Sunday and is working through protocol and has a good chance to be cleared for the weekend.
Seumalo is expected to play after battling a pec injury for several weeks, causing him to miss one game and unable to finish others. However, he played every snap but one (the final kneel down) against the Bengals. Players who have received rest will also suit up.
Yesterday, CB Cory Trice Jr.’s 21-day window to come off IR closed. He will miss the rest of the 2025 season.
Pittsburgh and Chicago kick off Sunday at 1 PM/EST.
