The solution to all the Spurs problems has never been more obvious

Injuries have been the name of the game for the Spurs to begin the 2025-26 season. First, it was De'Aaron Fox; then, it was Dylan Harper; now, it is Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle. But despite that, the Spurs have rattled off 10 victories in their first 14 games and have been one of the pleasant surprises in the league.

Still, this Spurs team is nowhere near a complete product. They'll look like a completely different squad when everyone is back and healthy. While losing the stars of the team is undeniably harmful, the player who has had the most underrated impact is none other than rookie Dylan Harper. The evidence couldn't be more unmistakable.

Dylan Harper was off to an electric start

Coming out of the draft, many questioned how Dylan Harper would fit on this team. Several people argued that Harper wouldn't have any role at all. Well, doubters be gone. Through just five games, the rookie proved that he is invaluable to this squad.

In this short stint of playing time, he helped the Spurs accomplish their greatest start in franchise history, beginning the year at 5-0. The Rutgers product undoubtedly showed out and quickly showed the world why he was the 2nd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. His impact off the bench could not be undersold.

The Spurs desperately need Dylan Harper in the lineup

Without Harper out there, it is clear that something is missing. The Spurs have badly needed a backup ball-handler and shot-creator. In Harper's relief, free agent addition Lindy Waters III has come in as a shooter but hasn't been able to provide the playmaking that the rookie gave the team. Outside of him, the Spurs don't have much in the way of a point guard.

Without Harper to set the table, buckets for players such as Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, and Luke Kornet have been harder to come by. The point guard can uniquely create plays for others or unleash his inner microwave and heat up for a stretch of his own. Without the Spurs stars on the court, the Silver and Black have gone on numerous cold streaks.

It is abundantly clear that the Spurs need Dylan out there. The bench unit we raved about all offseason is not the same without their point guard. The Spurs are far from their ultimate potential, and it has shown. On the bright side, Harper will be returning shortly, and he will get back to showing off. When he returns, keep a keen eye on him and notice how significant an impact he truly has.
