ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions opened the 21-day return window for cornerback and special teams standout Khalil Dorsey on Thursday.
Dorsey has been out of action since suffering a wrist injury back in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns. He was a full practice participant in his first day back on the field in nearly two months.
It’s been a tough year to stay healthy for Dorsey. He suffered a lower leg fracture in December against the Buffalo Bills last year. Dorsey made it back late in training camp from his lengthy injury recovery, then logged 19 defensive snaps and another 54 on special teams in the four games he played.
Dorsey has 21 days from Thursday for the team to activate him from injured reserve to the active roster.
The Lions are getting a handful of defensive pieces back for the playoff push. Dorsey and the soon-to-be-returning Malcolm Rodriguez provide an immediate boost to Dave Fipp’s special teams unit. Top cornerback D.J. Reed has a chance to play this weekend against the New York Giants. Veteran pass rusher Marcus Davenport has been back at practice for more than a week, as has Josh Paschal.
Lions coach Campbell has previously called Dorsey one of, if not the best, punt gunners in the NFL, saying, “He’s always causing some type of disruption.”
Safety Kerby Joseph (knee) and cornerback Terrion Arnold (concussion) still have not returned to practice. But Joseph is said to be improving, and Arnold still has to clear concussion protocol.
