Al Michaels’ three-year contract with Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” expired at the end of the 2024 NFL season. The media giant extended Michaels’ deal for one more year before the start of the 2025 season - leaving his longterm broadcasting future in question.
Michaels, who recently turned 81 years old, hopes to continue working with Amazon after the conclusion of the ongoing NFL season.
"I feel really good right now. It's been a good year. A lot of fun. I love the people I'm working with. So if I had to make a decision today, I would want to come back,” Michaels said during a recent interview with Jimmy Traina of SI Media.
Michaels recognizes that this decision isn’t solely up to him, and that Amazon will need to extend his contract yet again in order to keep him on board.
“It's a two-way street here,” Michaels added. “They could tell me, ‘Hey, we gotta move on. it's time to make a transition.' All that. It could happen.
"But as of the moment, as we sit here on this mid-November afternoon, I feel really good. Still love what I do. And again, work with a tremendous crew. So, yeah, I think at this moment in time, I'd like to continue, yes."
Michaels is one of the most iconic play-by-play voices in sports broadcasting history. The legendary media personality has been calling NFL games since 1975.
Michaels’ “Thursday Night Football” broadcasting partner Kirk Herbstreit signed a five-year deal with Amazon Prime Video in 2022, keeping him in the booth through the 2026 NFL season.
Michaels and Herbstreit will be in the booth for Week 12’s “Thursday Night Football” matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans. Thursday night’s primetime game will kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET.
