Spurs vs. Hawks: The matchup

The Hawks are back on the road after having a five-game win streak snapped at home by the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night. Atlanta enters Thursday with a 9-6 overall record and is 8-3 in 11 games since opening the season with three losses in its first four contests. The Hawks continue to play without star guard Trae Young due to a knee injury, yet keep winning to prompt questions about Young’s place with the franchise moving forward. Forward Jalen Johnson is among the Hawks to take a step forward, ranking among the top 30 players in the NBA in scoring (22.0 ppg), rebounding (9.5 rpg), assists (6.5 apg) and field goal percentage (57.4%).

Like the Hawks, the Spurs are also moving forward without their top player as forward Victor Wembanyama sits with a calf injury expected to sideline him for multiple weeks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. San Antonio is 2-0 since Wembanyama suffered the injury in a loss to the Golden State Warriors last Friday night, toppling the Sacramento Kings (123-110) and Memphis Grizzlies (111-101) as part of the team’s five-game home stand, which wraps with Thursday’s matchup against Atlanta. De’Aaron Fox picked up more of the scoring load on both nights, finishing with 28 and 26 points, respectively.
