While the timing during the season may have been a bit surprising, it wasn’t shocking to see the New York Giants fire head coach Brian Daboll. After a few unsuccessful seasons and some questionable work handling injuries, New York decided to move on and named Mike Kafka the coach for the rest of the season.
General manager Joe Schoen kept his job, to the surprise of many. Even though he is safe for now, details have emerged about his future with the Giants.
“While there have been some whispers about Schoen’s status being tenuous, his contract runs through 2026, [and] multiple league sources who have spoken to the Giants believe he is likely to remain unless there is a strong head coaching candidate who wants to bring in his own general manager. Though that seems unlikely considering Schoen is leading the search and compiling the list of candidates,” Raanan wrote.
Based on that information, it does appear that Schoen won’t be going anywhere, and the Giants will let him fulfill his contract.
Schoen has received plenty of criticism for New York’s roster since he took over, but with how promising the current rookie class has looked, it’s not shocking to see him be given more time. Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo and Abdul Carter have shown flashes of brilliance and given the fan base the kind of hope it hasn’t had in years.
If Schoen is already leading the search for a new coach, it’s unlikely the Giants would let him go and start over. If he was going to be fired, he likely would have left with Daboll.
