The New York Giants‘ head coaching job has emerged as a “highly coveted” job, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. Despite the team’s 2-9 record, New York has the pieces in place to build a successful team, and the legacy of the storied Giants’ franchise has multiple candidates already interested in taking the position.

Numerous Names Have Been Mentioned By Insiders

The Giants are expected to have no shortage of interest in their open head coaching job, starting with candidates who have previous ties to the team. Raanan mentioned former Giants and current Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, and former Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce as “those that seem destined for interviews.”

Several top coordinators’ names have been mentioned in conversations with people around the league, including the Chargers’ DC Jesse Minter, the Rams‘ DC Chris Shula, and the Packers’ DC Jeff Hafley.

According to NFL insider Jay Glazer of FOX, Shula’s name is “really starting to pop up,” and could become the next head coach from the Sean McVay coaching tree. He also said that college coaches such as Lane Kiffin and Marcus Freeman would not get consideration as the Giants look to stay in the NFL ranks.

Former head coaches who could be of interest are Mike McCarthy, Jon Gruden, Matt Nagy, Arthur Smith, and Vance Joseph. McCarthy previously won a Super Bowl with the Packers, while Nagy was the former head coach of the Bears and is now the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs.

Joe Schoen must make sure that the next hire is truly the right guy to lead the team, as New York has burned through very different head coaches in Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge, and Brian Daboll, with the initial promise of the 2022 season wearing off by Year 4.

Giants Have The Team In Place To Return To Success

The Giants have set themselves up for future success, with Joe Schoen’s masterclass in the 2025 NFL draft bringing in New York’s next franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart via draft-day trade.

In just seven starts, Dart has energized the fanbase, throwing for 1,417 yards with ten touchdowns to just three interceptions. He has also extended plays with his legs, rushing for 317 yards and seven ground scores for Big Blue.

Dart also has weapons galore, with breakout rookie running back Cam Skattebo and second-year wide receiver Malik Nabers set to return from injury next season. The offensive line has Andrew Thomas to protect Dart, while Tyrone Tracy Jr., Theo Johnson, and Darius Slayton are some of the team’s other top options.

On the defensive side of the ball, New York has one of the most talented fronts in the league, anchored by nose tackle Dexter Lawrence. Brian Burns is playing like a DPOY candidate, while he is flanked by fellow edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and third overall pick Abdul Carter.

Then there is the allure of being in the largest media market in the country and having the chance to continue the legacy of one of the league’s most storied franchises. What more could a head coach want than to return the New York Football Giants to their former glory?

Although things have looked bleak in East Rutherford for quite some time, the Giants’ job looks just as appealing as it always has, with the roster already in place to get back to relevancy. Now it’s a matter of finding the right head coach to maximize the talent on this team and take them back to the promised land.
