Why C.J. Stroud isn't playing tonight for Texans with injury news, return timeline

Another week, another Houston Texans QB start for Davis Mills.

That means another week on the sideline for third-year quarterback C.J. Stroud.

It's not how the Texans would've drawn it up, but it's just the way things work out sometimes during the course of an NFL season.

This start for Mills is a big one. It's Thursday Night Football to open Week 12 against the Buffalo Bills.

The Texans are 5-5, while the Bills are 7-3. Houston probably needs a win to maintain firm playoff race footing.

Stroud can only watch.

Why isn't C.J. Stroud playing tonight?

C.J. Stroud isn't playing Thursday night against the Bills because he remains injured.

Stroud has a concussion and hasn't made it through protocol and up to speed yet.

It's the third consecutive game that Stroud has missed. In his absence, Mills has gone 2-0 to get Houston back to .500.

When is C.J. Stroud coming back?

The hope is that Stroud will return in Week 13.

The Texans have the timeline working in their favor. The Thursday game in Week 12 means they have a mini-bye afterward, essentially 10 days for Stroud to get right.

If Mills play well again, it won't create a real controversy but it will put the onus on Stroud to hit the ground running when he's back.
