Referee Adrian Hill’s night came to a sudden and painful end on Thursday, adding another layer of chaos to an already physical matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans.

Early in the third quarter, Hill suffered an apparent lower-leg injury and was forced to remove himself from the game, prompting an uncommon mid-game officiating change that briefly halted play at NRG Stadium.

The incident occurred with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter, during a stoppage moments after another crushing Texans sack of Josh Allen. As Hill moved to reposition himself behind the play, he suddenly halted, grimaced and reached down toward his left foot.

He attempted to plant and walk it off, but immediately buckled, unable to put any weight on the leg.

Texans medical staff rushed to assist, eventually helping Hill to the sideline while he visibly struggled to lift or rotate his foot. A cart was brought to the Houston sideline as it became clear he would not be able to continue.
