Liverpool have had a challenging start to the 2025/26 season after winning the league by a landslide in Arne Slot’s first year in charge.
The Reds have already lost more league matches than they managed throughout the entirety of last season and need a massive turnaround in fortunes if they are to regain their position at the summit come May.
This period marks Slot’s first real moment of pressure since replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, but do Liverpool deserve to be as low as eighth in the table based on their performances?
Where Liverpool sit in the Premier League XG table
If the Premier League table was decided on xG, Liverpool would be in fifth position after five matches, which on the face of it suggests that the club would be performing slightly better than what they currently are.
However, it’s worth noting that on this table, calculated by Opta, Liverpool have a tally of 17.6 points - rounding up to 18 which is the exact number of points Liverpool have after 11 matches.
It has them scoring 18 goals, which is the exact number they have, but conceding slightly less at 14 as opposed to the 17 they’ve conceded - suggesting that opponents are often more clinical against Liverpool than expected.

Leaders Arsenal sit top of the table in both real life and in terms of xG - demonstrating that they have been the best team in the division so far both in terms of points and overall performance.
Arsenal have a tally of 24 points when it comes to xG, however, which is two lower than they have in reality. The Gunners have an xG of 19 scored which is one lower than in real life and expected goals against of six, having conceded just five.
On the whole xG is a fair reflection of the league table. However, there are some examples of teams that don’t necessarily dominate games, performing much better than the analysts expect in the league table. For example, Palace in 10th are third in the xG table. Meanwhile, Villa are 19th in the xG table despite being in sixth position in the Premier League.
