Liverpool are looking to strengthen their ranks in the new year despite a record-breaking summer transfer window

Liverpool’s interest in Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo continues to burn bright as we approach the January transfer window.

Despite the majority of their record summer spending going on new attacking-minded players, the Reds find themselves searching for another cog in their frontline.

Not only are Liverpool looking for a quick injection of flair to salvage their season hopes, they have begun their search for a long-term Mohamed Salah successor.

The Egyptian turns 34 next year, by which time he will be into the last 12 months of his contract. His performances this season have been way off his usual form, which has seemed to accelerate Liverpool’s pursuit of a new right-winger.

Liverpool considering signing Antoine Semenyo

Semenyo has impressed a number of clubs with his performances for Bournemouth and Liverpool are said to be considering a swoop for his signature in January.

Fabrizio Romano recently reported that there will be a clause active in Semenyo’s contract in both the winter and summer transfer windows. It will cost the Reds £60 million plus an extra £5 million in add-ons once the January window opens.

Bournemouth naturally want to keep their star winger on the books but if his clause is activated, they will need to let him go.

“Liverpool are interested and keen on a potential deal for Antoine Semenyo. From what I am hearing, Liverpool are considering this possibility,” Romano said. “They are following the player and have a very good relationship with Bournemouth. Let’s see what is going to happen in the next month so let’s see what is going to happen.”

Danny Murphy expects Liverpool to pursue Antoine Semenyo transfer

Liverpool are a hot topic of conversation among pundits at the moment, as their form is really letting down the surface level standard of the team.

Danny Murphy believes his old side will be in the queue to sign Semenyo, despite having spent hundreds of millions on the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.

When asked by Jim White on talkSPORT whether the duo ‘aren’t enough’, Murphy replied: “They’re both strikers. So in wider areas, is Slot happy with what he’s got?”

He gave a similar answer when quizzed if Salah is ‘not enough’ out wide for Liverpool.

“He’s not going to be there forever,” Murphy said.

“If you think his [Semenyo’s] attributes add quality and a different option, you’re going to be in the market for him at that price. It would be unrealistic to think they would bring him without getting rid of one. They could easily let one go.”

“The one thing he gives you, which Liverpool don’t have, is physical presence. He’s electric, he’s quick, he’s great in the air, and he’s two-footed. It’s an amazing unique set of talents. If you’re at Liverpool and you’re looking at him for that price, I think it would be unusual if they weren’t in for him,” he said.

Last month, the former Anfield centre-back said it could be something that is ‘hurting’ Liverpool and impacting their recent poor run of form.

“We talk about the summer signings and integrating them into how Liverpool play, but has it affected them with set pieces? The full-backs are quite small. There's no sort of great physical presence in there,” Carragher said.

“Maybe it is hurting Liverpool, not just because of their football but also coping with set pieces.”
