Newcastle United return to Premier League action against Manchester City this Saturday evening.

Newcastle United are looking to bounce back from consecutive Premier League defeats when they host an in-form Manchester City side at St James’ Park on Saturday (5:30pm kick-off).

The Magpies sit 14th in the Premier League table and two points above the relegation zone having picked up 12 points from their opening 11 league matches. Eddie Howe’s side head into the game on the back of defeats at West Ham United and Brentford, but have won each of their last five matches at St James’ Park in all competitions.

Still, Howe has never beaten Manchester City in the Premier League with his only win against Pep Guardiola’s side coming in the 1-0 Carabao Cup home win back in 2023.

Newcastle United team news v Manchester City

Howe will be hoping to have Anthony Gordon back available after a hip injury. The winger has trained in the build-up to Saturday’s match having missed the Brentford game and the subsequent international break with England.

Sandro Tonali and Nick Pope have also been cleared to play. Pope went off with a concussion against Brentford but has passed the 12-day concussion protocol period, while Tonali has no major issues after being rested for Italy’s final World Cup qualifier match against Norway, which ended in a 4-1 defeat.

Tino Livramento remains a doubt for the game having been ruled out since September with a knee injury. Yoane Wissa won’t be involved once again due to his knee injury.

And another player has already been ruled out of the match.

Dan Burn banned v Manchester City - Premier League suspension rules explained

Newcastle defender Dan Burn was sent off during the 3-1 defeat at Brentford last time out in the Premier League before heading away with England.

The 33-year-old conceded a penalty with the score at 1-1 and, as he was already on a booking, was given his marching orders as The Magpies fell to another disappointing away defeat.

Had Burn been shown a straight red card, he would have had to miss Newcastle’s next three Premier League matches.

But Premier League rules explain that a sending off as a result of two bookable offences means a player is only banned for one match.

Burn would have been available to play in the Champions League against Marseille regardless of his suspension situation as domestic suspensions don’t carry over into Europe and vice-versa. But he will be back available in the Premier League for the trip to Everton next Saturday (5:30pm kick-off).

Burn is also at risk of a yellow card suspension in the Premier League with any player who picks up five bookings in the opening 19 matches of the league season handed a one-match ban. The defender has picked up three bookings so far and is two more away from a further suspension.

Captain Bruno Guimaraes has also picked up three bookings this season in the Premier League.

NUFC changes v Man City in Dan Burn’s absence

Burn had been filling in at left-back in the absence of Tino Livramento and the management of Lewis Hall’s minutes after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

But Burn’s suspension means Howe will have to find a solution against one of the Premier League’s top sides this weekend.

Hall has been tipped for his first Premier League start at St James’ Park since February having looked solid off the bench in recent matches while also featuring twice for England Under-21s during the international break.

Alternative options would be to play Kieran Trippier at left-back and Emil Krafth or Jacob Murphy at right-back. Hall, if fit, is clearly the preferred option as we could see one of the Premier League’s best young left-backs finally unleashed once again.
