Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is optimistic about a triple fitness boost ahead of his side's showdown with Manchester City. The Magpies chief is keen to welcome back £105million worth of talent with Tino Livramento, Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope all returning from injuries. Gordon and Livramento are crucially nearing comebacks, whilst Pope has recovered from a concussion.
Howe could also hand Lewis Hall a start against City and the squad may well sport a refreshed appearance compared to the setback at Brentford a fortnight ago. Speaking at his press conference, Howe revealed: "Anthony Gordon is very close. He's worked well during the break and he's touch and go for the game. We'll make a very late decision. Nick Pope has trained and there's no problems there."
Discussing Livramento, Howe added: "He's very close. He's trained in the international break which is great to see. He's such an important player for us and it's great to have him back training with the group. He's done a lot of work. He's been very, very good professionally with how he's dealt with the injury and the work he's done with the physios so I'd say he's in good shape."
Howe verified that both Sandro Tonali and Joelinton are ready to face City after being considered uncertain over the past two weeks.
Joelinton departed with a knock against Brentford whilst Tonali was withdrawn from the Italy squad for the World Cup encounter with Norway. The Magpies are still battling on all fronts, but they're aware that a loss against Man City could see them drop into the relegation zone if other matches don't go their way.
Howe has made it clear that he hasn't sought support from higher-ups, instead concentrating his efforts on training. Howe stated: "I have not seeked assurances. It is about working for me. It is showing we have the expertise to guide us forward."
