Cleveland Browns Film Room: Is Myles Garrett Turning Into T.J. Watt?

Over his past three games, Cleveland Browns EDGE Myles Garrett has logged 10 sacks, including four last week against the Baltimore Ravens. Despite his dramatic increase in production, Garrett's quality of play has mostly remained constant, the biggest difference being the impact of his teammates, allowing him to benefit. This is what has enabled Pittsburgh Steelers' All-Pro T.J. Watt to rack up so many sacks, and now Garrett is finally enjoying the same spoils.

The most significant impact on the defensive line aside from Garrett isn't coming from the opposite side. In fact, the other EDGE position has mostly been middling at best, with current starter Isaiah McGuire having a disappointing season from a pass-rushing perspective. He's not a non-factor, but he's far from a threat, consistently winning under 10% of his reps. Even after a fantastic Week 1 performance, McGuire's win rate this year is just 10.6%, and that number drops to 4.8% since Week 4.

McGuire lost his starting job to Alex Wright, who is having an excellent campaign as a run defender, but is also underwhelming as a rusher.

Instead, the improved play is coming from the defensive interior. Maliek Collins' early-season dominance as a pass-rusher has tailed off a bit, but he's still a force inside the likes of which this team hasn't had.

The biggest factor, however, is the play of rookie fifth overall pick Mason Graham, who logged a career-high five pressures on Sunday and is visibly improving each week, developing his technique and hand usage as a rusher while playing excellent run defense. Graham has been taking steps over the past few weeks, particularly since the team returned from the bye week. He is beginning to understand how to win reps consistently and how to better utilize his new athleticism as opposed to what he was used to in college.
