The Premier League returns this weekend following the November international break.

Arsenal sit four points clear at the top of the table but face fresh injury concerns, including a key blow to defender Gabriel, ahead of the north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday.

Second-placed Manchester City travel to Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

Eddie Howe’s side find themselves in an unusual position, closer to rock-bottom Wolves in points than to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool welcome Nottingham Forest to Anfield as Arne Slot’s side aim to return to winning ways following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Manchester City before the international break.

While the league’s return brings excitement, it also delivers disappointing news for former Liverpool forward Fabio Carvalho.

Brentford have confirmed that Carvalho has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and will miss the remainder of the season.

The 23-year-old has already been assessed by a specialist and will now prepare for surgery, having started his rehabilitation at the club.

Carvalho joined Brentford from Liverpool in August 2024 and has made 33 appearances in all competitions.

This season, he has featured nine times for the Bees, scoring three goals – including a dramatic last-minute equaliser against Chelsea at the Gtech Community Stadium in September.

Carvalho came through Fulham’s academy before joining Liverpool in 2022, where he made just 21 appearances over two seasons and had loan spells at RB Leipzig and Hull City.

He struggled to break into Brentford’s starting XI last season under Thomas Frank due to strong competition and later missed months with a shoulder injury.

With Mbeumo and Wissa departing, Carvalho faces competition from Igor Thiago, Dango Ouattara, and Kevin Schade in Keith Andrews’ preferred front three.

Once highly rated, his career has stalled, and this injury marks another setback.
