Houston Texans sack Josh Allen eight times, baffle Buffalo Bills

Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Calen Bullock forced three turnovers and the Houston Texans defense sacked Josh Allen eight times in a primetime win over the Buffalo Bills.

"Thank God," said Bullock, who recorded two interceptions and forced a fumble in the 23-19 victory Thursday in Houston. "Got to go out there, Thursday night , in front of the whole world.

"To play a game like that, can't get no better than that."

Pass rushers Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter recorded 2.5 and two sacks, respectively, in the Texans' third-consecutive victory.

"We've just got to keep hunting," Anderson said. "I think [this] was just a perfect example of everybody hunting relentlessly and doing whatever it takes."

The Bills out-gained the Texans 326 to 261 in total yards and held a five-minute edge in time of possession, but were doomed by turnovers and constant pressure. Allen failed to account for a touchdown for the first time since Week 2.

"No one blinked," Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. "I talked to the guys [and said] this is going to be a heavyweight fight. We've gotta keep throwing punches no matter how it looks."

Running back James Cook scored on a 45-yard run 5:49 into the game for a 6-0 Bills lead. Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn made a 24-yard field goal on the next possession. Bills kicker Matt Prater split the uprights from 44-yards out early in the second quarter for a 9-3 advantage.

The Texans took their first lead when quarterback Davis Mills connected with wide receiver Christian Kirk for a 2-yard touchdown about six minutes later. That score, which ended a 12-play, 77-yard drive, and extra point gave the Texans a 10-9 lead.

Bullock intercepted Allen on the first play of the next drive, leading to a 43-yard field goal from Fairbairn and 13-9 edge. Just seconds later, Bills running back Ray Davis scored on a 97-yard kickoff return, stealing the lead.

Mills threw an 8-yard touchdown pass in the final seconds of the half and the Texans led 20-16 at the break.

Both teams struggled to move the ball early in the third quarter. Bullock forced a fumble from wide receiver Khalil Shakir with about four minutes remaining in the quarter. Fellow safety Jaylen Reed recovered the loose ball and the Texans added to their lead with another Fairbairn field goal.

The Texans defense came up with several big fourth-down stops down the stretch. Prater made a 38-yard field goal for the final points of the night with 5:44 remaining. Bullock intercepted Allen's final pass of the night with about 20 seconds remaining on the game clock.

Allen completed 24 of 34 passes for 253 yards. He also ran for 20 yards on five carries. Cook totaled 129 yards from scrimmage and a score on 20 touches. Shakir caught eight passes for 110 yards.

Mills completed 16 of 30 passes for 153 yards and two scores. Texans running back Woody Marks logged 74 yards on 16 carries.

Linebacker Henry To'oTo'o, defensive end Derek Barnett and defensive tackle Tim Settle Jr. joined Anderson and Hunter with sacks of Allen. Defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr., recorded a half-sack in the victory.

The Texans (6-5) will face the Indianapolis Colts (8-2) in an AFC South divisional meeting Nov. 30 in Indianapolis. The Bills (7-4) will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4) on Nov. 30 in Pittsburgh.
