The latest Manchester United team news - including updates on Benjamin Šeško and Lisandro Martínez.
Manchester United return to Premier League action on Monday evening when they welcome Everton to Old Trafford – but Ruben Amorim won’t have a full first-team squad to choose from with a fresh injury issue emerging in the build-up to the match.
Summer signing Benjamin Šeško has been ruled out of the game thanks to a knee injury sustained during the 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur prior to the international break, and the Red Devils may also be without defenders Lisandro Martínez and Harry Maguire when they welcome former manager David Moyes back to his old stomping grounds.
We’ve brought together all of the latest Manchester United team news and injury updates below ahead of Monday’s match, along with our prediction for Amorim’s starting line-up.
How long will Manchester United’s Benjamin Šeško be out for?
Šeško was left in pain after a tough tackle from Micky van de Ven denied him the Slovenian a goalscoring opportunity and went straight down the tunnel after the match – and won’t be walking out of it this weekend as a result of that knee injury.
The 22-year-old subsequently missed out on Slovenia’s international squad and is now set for what could prove to be a prolonged spell on the sidelines, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Šeško will miss around three more weeks of football. Some media outlets have estimated that he could be unavailable for over a month.
The exact nature of the injury has not yet been made public, but Amorim admitted after the Spurs match that he was “concerned” by the injury and Šeško certainly won’t be involved against Everton this Monday, leaving United with Joshua Zirkzee as their only recognised centre-forward – although it is perhaps more likely that Bryan Mbeumo or Matheus Cunha fills in up front instead of the Dutchman.
Will Lisandro Martínez or Harry Maguire be fit to face Everton?
Argentine defender Martínez is now back in training after missing nearly 10 months of football due to an ACL injury and even travelled to train with his national squad, although he didn’t play a game for them. It’s unclear as yet whether Amorim feels that the 27-year-old is ready to start and it is perhaps more likely that he makes his return from the bench after Amorim said prior to the international break that he “was going to need time” to get back to full fitness.
Fellow centre-back Maguire, meanwhile, is a doubt for the Everton game due to a hamstring injury which he picked up against Spurs, but the issue is not expected to prove serious. Kobbie Mainoo is expected to be back after a knock ruled him out of the game in north London, while Casemiro – another player who picked up a minor injury during that match – was able to play for Brazil over the break and should be available to start for United this week.
Manchester United predicted line-up vs. Everton: Lammens; Shaw, De Ligt, Yoro; Dorgu, Fernandes, Casemiro, Dalot; Mount, Mbeumo, Cunha.
