Italian media delivers blunt verdict on Kostas Tsimikas at AS Roma so far

Kostas Tsimikas’ loan move to AS Roma has come under the microscope, with Italian media offering a blunt assessment of the Greek left-back’s performances so far this season.

Following the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, Tsimikas departed Merseyside temporarily in search of more playing time. Andy Robertson remained at Liverpool to provide experienced cover for the Hungarian, but has been called upon more often than initially expected.

Under Gian Piero Gasperini, Roma – who finished fifth in Serie A last season – has made an impressive start to 2025/26, winning eight of its first 11 matches. The Italian side has also suffered three defeats but currently sit atop the table, level on points with Inter Milan.

Many had expected the experienced Tsimikas to become a regular at Stadio Olimpico, and the Italian media has now weighed in on his performances, highlighting the challenges the Greek faces.

With playing time limited at Liverpool, Tsimikas – who notched 18 assists in 115 appearances for the Reds – was keen to move to Roma after missing out on the opening two games.

However, his start in Italy has been mixed. His debut, a brief nine-minute cameo against Lazio, was hard to assess, though he featured for the full 90 minutes three days later as Gasperini’s side secured a 2-1 Europa League win over OGC Nice.

Roma supporters have praised Tsimikas’ deliveries, noting that, along with those of Angelino, they represent a “massive luxury” for the team. However, things have quickly taken a turn for the worse, with Tsimikas now well down the pecking order among Roma’s defenders.

Even when Angelino has struggled with injuries, Gasperini chose to shift Wesley from the centre of defense to the left rather than hand Tsimikas a start.

In Roma’s last eight matches, Tsimikas has featured in just three, and he has been substituted in each of those appearances.

"Fast forward a few months and there have been too many mistakes, some anonymous performances, pushing the ex-Liverpool man further and further down the pecking order," said Football Italia.

"What we can confirm is that Roma have absolutely no regrets that their agreement with Liverpool was a dry loan, without any guarantees or obligations to make it a permanent transfer."

Elsewhere, Tuttomercatoweb journalist Andrea Losapio has suggested that Tsimikas could make a return to Liverpool’s Anfield in the near future—though not in January—unless he manages a significant turnaround in form in the coming weeks.

"But his continued tenure seems unlikely unless there's a clear turnaround in the coming weeks. A stay until the end of the season is likely, however, given his role as Angelino's deputy" said Losapio.
