Eddie Howe has provided injury updates on Newcastle United stars Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and Nick Pope ahead of Saturday’s game against Manchester City.
The Newcastle United manager will be weighing up changes to his side following the disappointing defeat to Brentford, as the Magpies aim to bounce back after the international break.
It is a tough return to action, with Newcastle United set to face Manchester City at St James’ Park. Pep Guardiola’s side are very much in form, as they attempt to challenge for the Premier League title.
But Eddie Howe could have multiple key players back from injury, so here are Geordie Boot Boys’ winners and losers following the Toon boss’ pre-match press conference.
Prediction for Newcastle vs Man City?
Newcastle United’s winners
Anthony Gordon
Ahead of Saturday’s game, Eddie Howe has confirmed that Anthony Gordon is close to returning from a hip injury.
That is a major boost, as the 24-year-old is one of the Magpies’ best players. While his Premier League form has been frustrating this season, this is the kind of big game that the England international thrives in.
If fit, Gordon should start against Manchester City. Based on what Howe says, it sounds like he will be available.

Tino Livramento
He might not be fit enough to start, but Newcastle United could have Tino Livramento back from injury.
That was always the plan, and Howe has stated that the 23-year-old is ‘very close’ to returning on Saturday evening.
Livramento will be pushing to feature in some capacity against Man City, and there is no doubt that he has been a huge miss during his two month absence.
His return will allow him to dovetail with Kieran Trippier at right-back, while he is also an option on the left side of defence.
Reminder: Paul Mitchell once thought that Newcastle United overspent on Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
In May 2025, The Daily Mail claimed that Paul Mitchell “made no secret of his belief the club overpaid for Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento.” 🤣
Newcastle United’s losers
Aaron Ramsdale
Eddie Howe has confirmed that Nick Pope is fit to play against Manchester City following the concussion he suffered during the defeat to Brentford.
That will likely mean that he retains his place in the starting XI, despite his poor performances in Newcastle’s previous two Premier League games.
In turn, that means that Aaron Ramsdale will remain on the bench. His only Toon starts have come in the Carabao Cup, with Howe yet to give him a sustained run in the side.
Some fans had hoped the door was now open for the summer signing to get a chance, but that no longer feels likely.

Harvey Barnes
If Gordon is available, he will almost certainly start. And if he does start, it will be on the left of attack.
That is bad news for Harvey Barnes, who will not be afforded the luxury of playing in his preferred position of left wing if he is named in the starting XI.
He will either be deployed on the right or be dropped to the bench, which seems harsh following his goal in the defeat to Brentford.
