Enzo Maresca Responds to Rumours About Goalkeeper January Exit

Enzo Maresca has tried to calm rumors about Filip Jorgensen’s future by saying that there have been no recent talks about a January transfer for the Chelsea goalkeeper. The Italian was asked about rumors that the 23-year-old wants to leave in the middle of the season because he hasn’t been getting enough playing time behind first-choice Robert Sanchez.

Jorgensen joined Chelsea from Villarreal in the summer of 2024. Since then, he has mostly been a backup player. This season, he has played even less because there is no Conference League football for the Blues, which helped him make appearances last season.

Reports, including one from Fabrizio Romano, say that the Denmark international and his agents have been looking at options before the winter window opens in search of more regular playing time. However, the club is not currently planning to let him go.

Maresca revealed in his press conference that there have been no new talks about leaving. The Chelsea manager said:

“I spoke with Filip at the beginning of the season and I didn’t speak with Filip in the last days about that.”

He went on to say that it’s normal for players on a competitive team to be frustrated when they don’t get enough playing time.

“I think all the players that they don’t play a lot or they don’t use to play, they would like to get more minutes, more games, it’s completely normal. But I didn’t speak with Filip.”

As has been reported, Chelsea’s position is that Jorgensen will stay at least until the end of the season. His role as Sanchez’s backup is likely to continue unless injuries or a drop in form change the order of the goalkeepers in West London.

Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Hierarchy

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea have a clearly defined goalkeeping hierarchy this season, with Robert Sanchez still the man trusted to start in the Premier League and Champions League. The Spaniard has repeatedly been described by his head coach as the club’s number one going into 2025–26 and has started the vast majority of league fixtures so far.

Behind him, Filip Jorgensen is the primary understudy. The Danish-Swedish goalkeeper was heavily involved in last season’s UEFA Conference League triumph, starting almost every game, including the final. However, his minutes have dipped, with Sanchez preferred in the biggest domestic and Champions League games this season.

United States international Gabriel Slonina now profiles as the third senior option, back at Stamford Bridge after loans with Eupen and Barnsley. Academy goalkeeper Max Merrick is registered in European competition and continues to work around the first team, effectively providing additional depth behind the established trio.
