‘There was an agreement’: Bayern transfer target made it clear he wants Liverpool move

Bayern ‘know’ that Liverpool currently lead the race for Marc Guehi, according to Christian Falk.

The Bavarian giants are among several of Europe’s top outfits (including Barcelona and Real Madrid) to have courted the Crystal Palace centre-back.

However, a number of reports from across the continent now indicate a certain acceptance that the centre-back is more than likely Anfield-bound.

Falk reports that the England international is keen on an eventual switch to Merseyside.

However, it’s worth emphasising that a move to Anfield is not 100% guaranteed at this stage (albeit the odds are against FC Bayern).

“It is true: Bayern know that Liverpool are in the lead in the race for Marc Guehi. Yes, there was an agreement in the summer, and the Crystal Palace star would like to play for Liverpool,” the BILD reporter exclusively informed CF Bayern Insider.

“FC Bayern did make efforts to try and get Guehi in the market. In his agency, there’s one agent who is working for the German market, and, of course, Bayern had a contact.

“However, the signs indicate that the Englishman is heading in the direction of Liverpool. There’s still some hope, there’s still a chance, but they know it’s getting hard.”

Of course, if Liverpool plan to follow through with a move in January for Guehi, this would complicate things for the Munich-based outfit.

Giovanni Leoni and Ibrahima Konate may force early transfer

In an ideal scenario, Bayern would be afforded the time and opportunity to lay down some groundwork for a move in the summer when the 25-year-old’s contract runs out.

However, the reigning Premier League champions may very well be led by necessity ahead of the January window.

With Giovanni Leoni out for much (if not all) of the 2025/26 season with an ACL injury, and Ibrahima Konate’s contract talks still unresolved, Liverpool may need to prepare for doomsday.

There’s an immediate need for reinforcements, given that only the Frenchman and Virgil van Dijk’s injury records can be relied upon.

But also, in the long term, sporting director Richard Hughes and the recruitment team may need to get some business done early to avoid leaving too much on their plate for the summer.

Bayern must now consider alternative targets

There may very well be ‘some hope’ left in Bayern’s pursuit of Marc Guehi, but Vincent Kompany’s men, similarly to Liverpool, need a greater guarantee amid contract uncertainty.

Much like the Reds, the German top-flight outfit may also look to offload another centre-back in the summer, with Kim Min-jae having been linked with the exit door for months.

Assuming the worst-case scenario were to be carried out, FC Bayern would arguably need two centre-backs coming in through the doors.

Konate would be an interesting solution

Real Madrid are a pretty significant obstacle when it comes to the prospect of competing for the Liverpool defender’s signature.

But if Bayern want a relatively cost-effective solution to the potential hurdle of Upamecano running down his contract, they don’t come much better than his international teammate.

Plus, there’s the added bonus of the Bundesliga being a league Konate is already very familiar with, having previously featured alongside Dayot Upamecano at RB Leipzig.

Liverpool and Bayern also have a pretty solid working relationship when it comes to transfers, having seen the likes of Sadio Mane and now Luis Diaz take the pathway to Germany.
