By now, most Liverpool fans are aware that the club holds an interest in Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.
DaveOCKOP exclusively reported on Thursday that the Reds had held positive exploratory talks with the Ghanian striker.
This season, Semenyo has delivered a string of standout performances, racking up six goals and three assists in the opening 11 league matches—a tally bettered only by Erling Haaland.
Having recently signed a five-year contract extension, Semenyo is bound to Bournemouth but features a release clause reportedly set at £65 million, which will be active for a limited period in January before dropping to just over £50 million in the summer.
This clause has drawn the attention of Liverpool, along with other top clubs including Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, making Semenyo one of the most sought-after players heading into the new year.
While Bournemouth would naturally prefer to retain their prized asset for the remainder of the campaign as they chase European qualification, a compelling financial argument suggests January may actually represent their best opportunity to maximise profit from any sale.
Bristol City, who sold Semenyo to the Cherries for approximately £10 million in January 2023, negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of that deal.
The Cherries would no doubt want to sell Semenyo for as much as possible as a result.
However, Andoni Iraola, speaking in his pre-West Ham press conference on Friday, has asserted he is “not worried” about the January window:
“We are in November, Antoine [Semenyo] is our player, he will continue to be our player,” the Spaniard said.
“In January, you can ask me about the market.”
“But right now, I am not worried about the next market. I am not worried about the situation.”
“In January, we will talk about whatever happened, the players we need.”
