NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell strongly hinted Friday that a city building a new stadium could soon host a Super Bowl for the first time.
Goodell was in Nashville, Tennessee, Friday for the topping-off ceremony for new Nissan Stadium, the new home of the Tennessee Titans that is expected to open in 2027. During a news conference before the ceremony, Goodell was asked about the chances of Nashville hosting a Super Bowl. Goodell seemed open to the idea, praising Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk in the process.
“I think so much of the vision that Amy and the Titans have here. Listen, it’s an important franchise and a wonderful franchise for the NFL,” Goodell said in a video posted by ESPN’s Turron Davenport. “I know the work that they’ve done here. From the moment you had the draft and what you did to change the trajectory of the draft, you actually took the draft and made it yours. But you did it in a way that made it incredibly impactful to the future of the NFL and the Titans.
“I think all of us at that moment had that wake-up moment that this is a Super Bowl-ready city,” Goodell continued. “The one thing that’s missing is the stage, and I think now you’re building a great stage. We have a process, but I have every expectation that you’re going to see that type of thing in the future.”
The earliest the Titans could potentially host a Super Bowl would be in 2029 for Super Bowl 63 because the sites for the next three Super Bowls have already been determined. This season’s Super Bowl 60 will be played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, home to the San Francisco 49ers. Super Bowl 61 will be played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and Super Bowl 62 will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
