WINSTON GETS ANOTHER START
Jaxson Dart suffered a concussion during the team's Week 10 loss in Chicago, which led to Jameis Winston making his Giants debut last week against the Packers. The veteran quarterback completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 201 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while adding 10 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Mike Kafka told reporters on Friday that the rookie is still working his way through the concussion protocol and has been ruled out for Sunday's game in Detroit. This paves the way for Winston to make his second consecutive start.
"My only concern was just making sure Jaxson's healthy and right," Kafka told reporters Friday. "Again, we have a lot of trust in the doctors. We have a lot of trust in that process, going through the concussion process. I know myself, I've had a couple concussions over the course of my career and you just want to feel comfortable and good. So, I think having that trust and understanding that everyone's just looking out for your best interest is important and we are certainly doing that with Jaxson."
Dart was putting together another strong performance prior to leaving the game against the Bears. He had thrown for 242 yards through three quarters and had another 66 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. It was the fifth time in seven starts that Dart had rushed for 50+ yards, his sixth game with a rushing touchdown, and the seventh outing where he accounted for multiple touchdowns.
Winston will be faced with a good opportunity to get the pass game going on Sunday. The Lions are a bit of a pass-funnel defense, as they boast a top 10 run defense while allowing 18 passing touchdowns this season, tied for the ninth-most in the NFL. Detroit's secondary is also banged up as starting cornerback Terrion Arnold (concussion) and starting safety Kerby Joseph (knee) have yet to practice this week after missing Week 11, while fellow starting corner D.J. Reed's status remains unclear as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. The Lions could be without three-quarters of their starting secondary, which would provide a boost to either Giants quarterback.
DETROIT'S PLAYMAKERS
You'd be hard-pressed to find another offense that has enjoyed as much consistent success over the last few years as the Lions. Since the start of the 2022 campaign, the Detroit offense has ranked within the top five in both points and yards every season. It starts up front with the offensive line, which has developed into one of the top units in the NFL. The group, led by tackles Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker, helps open things up for everyone on the offense.
The Lions have one of the league's most successful rushing attacks with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery leading the way. Gibbs is averaging 5.2 yards per carry with 732 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground to go with 37 receptions for another 334 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Montgomery has taken 110 rush attempts for 493 yards (4.5 avg.) and five touchdowns. While they have different skillsets, both backs have proved to be dangerous threats behind this offensive line.
Quarterback Jared Goff is completing 69.7 percent of his passes for 2,490 yards, 21 touchdowns and just four interceptions this season, good for a passer rating of 110.8. When he does drop back to pass, Goff often looks for his No. 1 receiver in Amon-Ra St. Brown. The talented wideout not only leads the Lions in just about every receiving category, but he is also among the league leaders with his 94 targets, 66 receptions, 735 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. The Lions' No. 2 receiver has picked things up as of late as Jameson Williams has at least four receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown in four of his last five games. Detroit will be without starting tight end Sam LaPorta, who was placed on injured reserve last week due to a back injury.
